Did you have a single defining moment when you knew you and your significant other were actually made for each other? For us, we have to go way back. Before we were dating, even. It was toward the end of my high school graduation party. Shawn snuck up behind me and smashed an entire piece of chocolate cake in my face. I had blue frosting stuck in the creases of my glasses and inside my nose. I wish my mind could have picked a more glamorous moment, but nope this was it!
You see, he knew me. We had been friends for several years before that and he knew I would find it hilarious. He knew I wouldn’t be upset. And he knew I would get him back! We started talking after that, but this was before smartphones y’all. Flip-phones were the norm, and text messages cost ten cents each. We would both rush home after work and log onto Yahoo Messenger so we could talk about everything under the sun.
The old expression “opposites attract” rings true for us since we are total polar opposites. Shawn is the spender and I’m the saver. He’s the pessimist and I’m the optimist (If you ever need a pep talk – HMU). He loves gaming, while I’d rather read or do something artsy. He’s a total night owl and I’m that obnoxious morning person that doesn’t even drink coffee.
As unalike as we are, though, we still laugh at the same jokes and finish each other’s sentences. We’ve even worked at the same place more than once (3 times to be exact). We’d carpool to work and then work at our desks all day – sometimes separate offices, and other times in the same room on the same team even. We’d stop mid day and have lunch together and go right back to our separate desks until it was time to go home. We did this for YEARS at multiple jobs. Some of our coworkers didn’t even know we were married until we told them.
As much as I’d love to say we are a real life version of Pam and Jim, we are definitely Dwight and Angela. A small resolute blonde obsessed with cats, and a tall individualistic goofball that is deeply engrossed in his hobbies… yep, that’s a more accurate description of us.
All our differences aside, the one thing we can agree on is you (and peanut butter)! Life is comprised of moments – good and bad- and we are here for all of it!
Take a look at some of the moments from our wedding day:
Hard to believe that it’s been 11 years ago last month, and I’m so glad we have these tangible memories to look back on.
My advice – save everything! Photos, cards, notes… put it in a scrapbook or a keepsake box and look back through it on your anniversary ten years from now. You will be so happy you did.
Xo,
Hayley & Shawn
